Abstract
The aim of the research is to trace the origins of the disaster film genre in the Western and Soviet film industries, to determine its definition and to identify the features of its development. Using comparative analysis and the cultural-historical method, the author identified the characteristic traits of films in this genre: in American films, there is a tendency toward grand scale and epicness, while in Soviet films, the focus is on the inner world of the individual. The author finds that the unifying features of both film industries are related with historical events, criticism of the system, and the emergence of a new type of human being.
